 VITAMINS

Vitamins are complex chemical substances required by the body in very small amounts. They are essential for life and maintenance of normal health. Act as catalyst in various body processes. Since vitamins cannot be manufactured in the body [at least in sufficient amounts] they have to be supplied through the diet.

The benefits of Vit. A:

  • Maintains health of specialized tissues such as the retina.
  • Aids in growth and health of skin and mucous membranes.
  • Promotes normal development of teeth, soft and skeletal tissue

Vit B5 (Pantothenic acid):

  • It is water soluble vitamin.
  • Deficiencymay cause paraesthesia or “pins and needles.”

Vit B9(Folate):

  • Folic acid is utilized thousands of times in the body to make blood cells, heal wounds, build muscles, necessary for every function that requires cell division.
  • Folic acid plays an important role in biosynthesis of nucleic acids [DNA and RNA].
  • Very important in foetal development and also helps to produce key chemicals for the brain and nervous system. Folic acid forms a co- enzyme in the synthesis of proteins for cell function and growth. Metabolism of homocysteine also requires folic acid.

Vitamin B12(Cyanocobalamin):

  • Vit B12 Deficiencymay cause megaloblastic anaemia, a condition where bone marrow produces unusually large, abnormal, immature red blood cells.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid):

  • Vitamin C promotes a healthy immune system, helps wound heal, maintains connective tissue and aids in the absorption of iron.
  • A deficiency of Vit.C leads to a condition called scurvy, characterized by weakness, anaemia, bruising, bleeding gums and loose teeth.

 Vitamin D

  • Vitamin D promotes the body’s absorption of calcium, essential to development of healthy bones and teeth.
  • Deficiency of Vit.D or an inability to utilize Vit.D may lead to a condition called rickets a weakening and softening of the bones brought on by extreme calcium loss.

Vitamin E

  • Protects cell membranes and tissues from damage by oxidation.
  • Aids in the formation of red blood cells and the use of Vit.K.
  • Promotes function of a healthy circulatory system.
  • E Deficiencyis uncommon, but it may cause hemolytic anemia in newborns. This is a condition where blood cells are destroyed and removed from the blood too early.

MINERALS

Just like vitamins, minerals help your body grow, develop, and stay healthy. The body uses minerals to perform many different functions — from building strong bones to transmitting nerve impulses.

Zinc

Zinc is present in small amounts in all tissues. It is a constituent of insulin and of many enzymes in the body. Zn deficiency can result in growth failure, loss of taste, and delayed wound healing. Growing children, pregnant and lactating women need more.

Sodium

The human body requires a small amount of sodium to conduct nerve impulses, contract and relax muscles, and maintain the proper balance of water and minerals. Hyponatremia is the term used to describe abnormally low amounts of sodium in the blood. This occurs mainly in older adults. Symptoms of hyponatremia can include nausea, vomiting, headaches, altered mental state/confusion, lethargy, seizures, coma.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an important mineral, playing a role in over 300 enzyme reactions in the human body. Its many functions include helping with muscle and nerve function, regulating blood pressure, and supporting the immune system. Magnesium deficiency is known as hypomagnesemia. Symptoms of magnesium deficiency include:

  • a loss of appetite
  • nausea or vomiting
  • fatigue or weakness

Iodine

  • Promotes normal thyroid function
  • Helps brain function and normal growth
  • They are also required for proper skeletal and central nervous system development in fetuses and infants

Iodine deficiency has multiple adverse effects on growth and development, and is the most common cause of preventable intellectual disability in the world. Iodine deficiency disorders result from inadequate thyroid hormone production secondary to insufficient iodine. During pregnancy and early infancy, iodine deficiency can cause irreversible effects.

FIBER

Fiber helps to get blood sugars under control. For those who don’t have type 2 diabetes, this could be the way to prevent it. 5 to 10 grams of soluble fiber a day decreases LDL cholesterol by about 5%. It speeds up the bowel movement, increasing stool weight, and decreasing
